GROMKA

THE LITTLE BIG CLUB

The beginnings of Grokma go back to 1995, when performers of various theatre groups decided to set up the ‘Teater Gromka’ theatre. Other individuals joined in and it eventually transformed into a club. The current Gromka collective comprises of a colourful bunch of literature, music and film enthusiasts with one thing in common: we love our Gromka, it gives us shelter and serves as a location where we can socialise and be creative. The little big Gromka is located in the very heart of Metelkova, and is different from other Metelkova clubs, because it is not just a concert venue, but can be organised more like a jigsaw. It can transform from a lecture hall into a cinema, from a concert venue into a lounge room or a theatre. Gromka is the patron of urban (sub) cultural practices, a shelter for music left with nowhere to go, supporter of political activism and informal education, founded on the good ol’ ‘do-it-yourself’ principles.

Gromka is fully open five days a week, from Tueasday to Saturday. The week usually kicks off with a Retrovizor crew film screening or a poetry or fiction reading of the LUD Literatura group and cinema evenings of the Cultorologist association, while the second part of the workweek is dedicated to various club evenings (ReŠetanje of the Radio Student resident DJ’s, Balkanistan nights, thematic music club nights, etc.) Gromka’s concert programme is varied and colourful: in addition to individual concert events, Gromka hosts improvised music concerts hosted by Defonija and experimental music concerts organised under its wing, the ska and street punk concerts courtesy of Twotonebinas, raging R.A.F.A.L. concerts, while concerts organised by Kantiteta offer folk singers music. Gromka’s programme includes monthly African nights, organised by the African society, occasional theatre plays, performances, stand-up comedy evenings and weekly Thursday lectures of the Workers-Punk University, organised by the Peace Institute.

Gromka is adorned by two smaller additional buildings:

PRIMARY SCHOOL

The former Mala šola (Preschool) was the additional building / work of art / urban sculpture to the older Šola (School) building, which was torn down in 1997. The first notice on demolition of Mala Šola came in 2005, followed by a couple of similar threats until the actual demolition took place on August 2 2008. On the premises of the former Mala šola, volunteers from various organisations and a number of individuals immediately helped put up the Primary school. The Metelkova artists and craftsmen and women who are largely responsible for its current look are Evin DobriloviÄŤ, Mare KovaÄŤiÄŤ, Stane Avsec, Miha Sever, TomaĹľ Furlan, Viktor Bitenc and others. The remains of the original Šola (School) building can be seen on the Tina DrÄŤar and Bine Skrts wall paintings in the Primary School, which were also their Graduate thesis at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Ljubljana.
In addition to occasional events, the Primary hosted preparation works for the Metelkova 2025 exhibition in Septembre and Octobre 2008. Spring 2009 should see the reintroduction of regular day and night time programme.

The SCHENGEN/BLACK KITCHEN

The Black kitchen is currently in urgent need of fresh forces! All maestros and chefs are invited to undertake public cooking and grilling in Metelkova’s main social kitchen facility. The candidates are expected to poses integrity, responsibility and respect of hygienic standards, and should definitely show grater culinary skills than their mums. The candidates should be able to provide the starving but demanding Metelkova visitors with varied selection of dishes and keep The Black kitchen on the no.1 spot of Ljubljana’s list of night time culinary offer.
